Thin, light and convertible tablets make waves at this year's IFA expo.

An Android tablet with a unique 'folded magazine' asymmetric design
Sony says it is pulling out all the stops for the release of its first two Android-powered tablets, the Sony Tablet S and Sony Tablet P. Its Sony Tablet S is designed for media consumption with a 9.4-inch touchscreen display, two cameras and a curved-top, "off-center design" that is conducive to extended viewing sessions. The Tablet S will go on sale in the US in September. The European launch will see the Tablet S released in September for €479 ($499).

A compact Android tablet that folds like a book
Sony’s second Android tablet, the Sony Tablet P, sports a book-like dual-screen design with two 5.5" displays that can be folded on top of each other for extra portability. The two-screen setup enables users to complete two different activities on one device, for example one screen can be used to read emails while the other is a keyboard. The Sony Tablet P will go on sale in the US in September and in Europe in November for €599 ($599).

A Windows tablet that converts into a desktop
Amongst Samsung's hefty tablet showcase at IFA was the Slate PC Series 7 tablet, a Windows 7-based slate that delivers the "performance and productivity of a desktop PC with the usability of a tablet." Measuring 12.9mm thin and weighing 860g, the Slate PC Series 7 runs on an Intel Core i5 processor and has an 11.6" screen. It can be transformed into a desktop PC when paired up with a docking station (that includes a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse) or used as a standalone tablet that features a touch screen or digital pen-input. No word on pricing or release dates.

An ultra-thin, ultra-light tablet
Toshiba's AT200 tablet went on a slimming diet before its unveiling at IFA. It has a profile of just 7.7mm thin and weighs just 558g. The 10.1" tablet runs Android 3.2 Honeycomb and offers a multitude of connectivity options including a micro-USB port, a micro-SD card slot, a micro-HDMI port, WiFi,  and front- and rear-facing cameras. The Toshiba AT200 will be available in the fourth quarter of 2011 in Europe. Pricing has not been announced.

HTC's first Android 3.1 tablet
The HTC Jetstream is the first HTC-made tablet to run the latest version of Google’s made-for-tablet OS, Android 3.1 Honeycomb. It features a 10.1" HD display, a Snapdragon 1.5GHz dual core processor, front- (1.3MP) and rear-facing (8MP) cameras, and 4G LTE/HSPA+ connectivity. The HTC Jetstream is available now for $699.99 on a two-year contract.

World's first tablet with a Super AMOLED Plus display
Samsung's Galaxy Tab 7.7 is the world's first tablet to feature the brilliant Super AMOLED Plus display. The tablet takes inspiration from its bigger 10.1" Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 but measures up at a thinner 7.89mm and lighter 335g. The tablet is powered by a 1.4GHz dual core processor, provides up to 10 hours of video playback and runs on Android 3.2 Honeycomb. While the Galaxy Tab 7.7 originally appeared on the IFA showroom floor, all traces of the tablet have since been removed and the tablet has been banned from sale in Germany following a new court injunction linked to the ongoing property dispute between Apple and Samsung.

The world's lightest 6" touchscreen e-reader
Sony showed off the world's lightest 6" touchscreen e-reader, the Reader Wi-Fi. The device was announced during Sony’s IFA press conference and is the first e-reader to offer wireless public library access for users that want to borrow e-books from their public library. The Sony Reader Wi-FI is based on Sony’s previous 6" e-reader but is smaller (measuring 8.9mm thin) and lighter (at 168 grams) than its predecessor. The Sony Reader Wi-Fi (PRS-T1) will be released in October 2011 for $149.
